I have applied for so many jobs but without luck.

The job market is so competitive these days and we are prone to a lot of rejections. A lot of times, we don’t even hear back from the recruiters. Yes, employers look for people with experience but even if you are an experienced person, you might be the victim of rejections. May be your message is not getting across your potential employers.na

What are the potential reasons?

Obviously, a lot of rejections may be a result of your application failing to meet criteria of the advertised job. Yes, there could be a few other reasons such as the format of your resume or the spelling errors but mainly is the lack of attention to specifics and the disorientation.

Some of the reasons are:

Lack of attention to detail

As an active job seeker, this is what we need to keep in mind right from the moment we start searching for a job. In an advertised position, the details are listed clearly about the skills required and the expectations of the position. But if you ignore those details and decide to continue your application thinking “Today, I will apply at least 10 jobs”, then you are clearly wasting your time. If you want to catch the next train, then you should go through the details and tailor your resume and your cover letter accordingly.

Not thinking from the employer’s perspective

This is one of the reasons why applicants fail to succeed. The minute we hit that apply button we tend to think that with whatever we are best at, we are going to get that job. But when you think from the employer’s perspective, it’s totally different.

As a secretary, your typing speed may be excellent, but you are obviously not going to type the whole day at your work. Together with your typing skills your organising skills, ability to prioritise, telephone skills and go out of the job skills are a must. Your employer is definitely going to look for these skills as a secretary.

Selling yourself high

Being confident is important but overestimating yourself can lead you off the track. When we are overconfident we tend to miss the plot because we are not prepared enough to get the job. Applicants fill up their resume with details that they may not have exposure to or a very little exposure. And when the interviewers touch base on that part, the candidates get busted.

It is also important to check whether a particular job that you are going to apply focuses highly on a certain skill, but you have very little knowledge of it. if that’s the case consider leaving that job application and proceed with the next one.

Inconsistency in your career ladder

This is where it hits harder when you are the butter, but you get turned down. Have you checked your resume whether the changes in your career are consistent? Does it leave enough room for your recruiters to trust you?

If you are applying for a particular position, you need to ensure that your resume has consistency in that career path. Changing jobs quite often and working in different fields in different jobs puts your employer in doubt whether you can make a successful employee.

There could be more reasons to why you are not getting a positive response. You could use a little more time on your next job application and consider the details rather than thinking of the probability of getting at least one job by applying multiple jobs randomly.
